Facebook lead ads, which Meta calls instant forms, usually produce more leads for the money because people never leave Facebook or Instagram and the form fills in their details. A landing page usually produces fewer leads, but each one has read about your offer and chosen to act, so more of them tend to become customers. The right choice depends on cost per qualified lead, not cost per lead.
Start with lead ads when you need volume quickly, have little time to build a page and can call leads back within minutes. Use a landing page when your service needs explaining, the price is high or you need to show proof before someone commits. This guide compares both, shows the form settings that improve lead quality, and gives the calculation to settle it for your business. For hands-on help, see our Meta ads management service.

Facebook lead ads vs landing page: side by side
| Facebook lead ads (instant forms) | Landing page on your website | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the form is | Inside Facebook or Instagram, prefilled from the profile | On your site, after a click |
| Typical lead volume | Higher, because there is less effort | Lower, because the click and page add effort |
| Typical lead quality | More mixed; some people submit without reading | Higher intent; they read your page first |
| What you need | An ad, a form and a privacy policy link | A page that loads fast, tracking and the Meta pixel or Conversions API |
| Room to persuade | A short intro card and up to a few lines | As much proof, detail and pricing as the page holds |
| Where leads go | Stored in Meta; connect to your CRM or download them | Straight to your inbox or CRM |
| Best for | Simple offers, quotes, call-backs, local services | Higher-priced or complex services, offers that need proof |
Settings that improve Facebook lead ad quality
Most complaints about junk leads come from forms set up with the defaults. These settings change the result:
- Form type: Higher intent. The default More volume form is quick to submit. Higher intent adds a review screen where people confirm their details before sending, which cuts accidental and careless submissions.
- One or two qualifying questions. Ask the postcode or ZIP code, the type of job, or when they want it done. Meta allows up to 15 questions, but every question adds friction, so ask only what helps you decide who to call first.
- Conditional logic. Questions can change based on earlier answers, so someone outside your area or below your minimum job size can be filtered out without a long form for everyone else.
- An honest intro card. Say what happens next and, where you can, a price range or starting price. People who know the price before they submit are less likely to waste a call.
- Privacy policy link. Meta requires one, and it reassures people about what you will do with their details.
- Leads leave Meta quickly. Connect the form to your CRM or email so you see leads in real time. Meta keeps leads for 90 days, so if you download them manually, do it often.
Speed matters more with lead ads
Someone who taps submit on a lead ad is still scrolling their feed a minute later and may not remember your name an hour after that. Lead ads work best when the lead gets an instant text or email and a call within minutes during working hours. If you cannot respond that fast, a landing page that sets expectations may serve you better. Our speed to lead guide shows how to set up instant replies and follow-up.
Send lead quality back to Meta
Meta's Conversions API for CRM integration lets you send later lead stages back to Meta, such as qualified or quoted, so its delivery can favour people more likely to reach that stage. Paired with the Conversion Leads performance goal, it may improve lead quality. Meta's documentation lists conditions: it works with instant form lead ads, you need to average at least 200 leads a month, send data daily, and the stage you optimise for must happen within 28 days of the lead and convert between 1% and 40% of leads.
Most small local businesses do not reach 200 leads a month, so for them the practical version is simpler: mark each lead as good or poor in your CRM, review which ads and form answers produce good ones, and adjust targeting and questions monthly.
The calculation that settles it: cost per qualified lead
| Line | Lead ads | Landing page |
|---|---|---|
| Ad spend | £600 / $800 | £600 / $800 |
| Leads (assumed) | 60 | 25 |
| Cost per lead | £10 / $13.33 | £24 / $32 |
| Share that are qualified (assumed) | 30%, so 18 | 80%, so 20 |
| Cost per qualified lead | £33.33 / $44.44 | £30 / $40 |
In this example the landing page looks more than twice as expensive per lead, but slightly cheaper per qualified lead, and fewer calls are wasted. Your numbers may point the other way. Our Google Ads vs Facebook Ads guide shows how to work out the most you can afford per lead.
A simple rule for choosing
- Start with lead ads if the offer is simple (a quote, a call-back, a booking), you can call back within minutes, and you need volume quickly.
- Start with a landing page if the service is high value, needs explaining or proof, or you cannot follow up fast.
- Either way, track qualified leads, not just leads, and test the other approach once you have a month of data.
Define a qualified lead before you spend another pound or dollar

Talk to us →Frequently asked questions
Are Facebook lead ads better than a landing page?
Lead ads usually give more leads for the money; landing pages usually give fewer leads of higher quality. Compare cost per qualified lead over the same budget and period to decide for your business.
Why are my Facebook lead ads getting poor leads?
Often because the form uses the default More volume type, asks no qualifying questions and gets slow follow-up. Switch to Higher intent, add one or two qualifying questions and reply within minutes.
What is the Higher intent form type?
It is an instant form option that adds a review screen so people confirm their details before submitting, which reduces careless submissions compared with the More volume form.
How many questions should a Facebook lead form have?
As few as you need to decide who to call first, usually contact details plus one or two qualifying questions. Meta allows up to 15, but each extra question adds friction.
Do Facebook lead ads work for local businesses?
Yes, especially for simple offers like quotes and call-backs, provided you target your service area, qualify by postcode or ZIP code and call leads back quickly.
